<p><span id="more-804"></span>Eine ganze Halle der didacta war vollgestopft mit Interaktiven Whiteboards. Auch sonst konnte sich kaum ein Stand erlauben, sie nicht zu haben. Das ist wohl das ganz große Ding und kaum eine Schule wird darum herum kommen. Gut dass beim <abbr title="Virtuelles Zentrum für Lehrerbildung">VZL</abbr> gerade ein <a title="Interaktive Whiteboards im Unterricht" href="http://vzl.online.uni-marburg.de/welcome.php?page=classes&amp;cid=82">Lehrerfortbildungskurs</a> zu dem Thema läuft&#8230; So klasse die Dinger auch sind – ich wünsche mir schon seit längerem eins in dem PC-Pool, in dem ich unterrichte – so dämlich ist doch manchmal die Software, die darauf läuft. Ich habe jedenfalls noch keine gefunden, die mich als visuellen Menschen zufrieden stellt. Außerdem wundert mich, dass wohl jetzt erst jemand darauf gekommen ist, eine Web Application für <abbr title="Interaktive Whiteboards">IWB</abbr>s zu erfinden, die plattformübergreifend ist, da sie auf HTML5 basiert. EasyChalk von <a href="http://chalkless-media.com/">Chalkless Media</a> ist auf der didacta in einer Betaversion zu sehen und dementsprechend waren auch viele Features noch nicht fertig. Aber was ich gesehen habe, sah viel versprechend aus. Ich habe mich gleich mal als Betatester angeboten. Mutig ist es natürlich schon, das in HTML5 zu machen, aber im Firefox 3.6 lief es recht stabil und man konnte über das Canvas Element auf dem Whiteboard malen. Vorteil: Es läuft wegen dem verzichten auf Flash auch auf dem iPad. Naja, erst mal schauen, was das <a title="Lernen mit dem iPad?" href="http://www.alexandersperl.de/2010/10/lernen-mit-dem-ipad/">iPad für den Unterricht</a> bringt. Auf jeden Fall ist das <abbr title="User Interface">UI</abbr> sehr viel besser als anderswo.</p>
<p>Sehr nett auch, was <a href="http://www.kids-interactive.de/">Kids Interactive</a> an IWB-Materialien zu konkreten Lehrwerken anzubieten haben. Eine wohltuende Abwechslung zu den doch oft etwas arg hässlich anmutenden mitgelieferten Karten usw. Die gibt es zwar umsonst, so sehen sie dann aber auch aus. Welcher Geografie-Lehrer wird ernsthaft das Gezackere  im Unterricht nehmen wollen.</p>
<p>Am zweiten Tag meines Aufenthalts in Stuttgart (Danke noch mal an Tobi <img src='http://www.alexandersperl.de/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' />  ) war ich dann auf der Fachtagung &#8220;Professional E-Learning&#8221;. Los ging es mit einem ganz hervorragenden Vortrag von <a href="http://www.frank-thissen.de/">Frank Thissen</a>, der das Themenfeld mit einer bestens abgestimmten Präsentation aufspannte. Leider sind die anderen Vorträge dann nicht mehr mit seinem Anspruch mitgekommen, Lernszenarien zu entwerfen, die zukunftsweisend sind, sondern beschrieben eher den Status Quo. Dennoch fand ich alle Vorträge sehr informativ und habe einige Anregungen mitgenommen, auch wenn es vielleicht andere waren, als es eigentlich gedacht war.</p>
<p>Ein Vortrag handelte davon, wie reale Lernräume den Lernprozess verbessern können, indem man Studierenden Kontexte schafft, die sie offener machen, Lernstoffe zu erarbeiten. Leuchtturmprojekte der <a href="http://www.hdm-stuttgart.de/">Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart</a> wurden vorgestellt und Fotos von englischen Universitäten gezeigt. So ungemein spannend diese Aspekte auch sind, darf ich noch mal daran erinnern, wie hoch die Studiengebühren in GB sind und wieviel Geld alleine an der Uni Marburg eingespart werden musste. Als Anregung habe ich allerdings mitgenommen, einfach die Räumlichkeiten, die vorhanden sind, bildlich gesprochen aufzubrechen und Studierende in immer neuen Konstellationen mit unterschiedlichsten Materialien Aufgaben lösen zu lassen. Äh, ja, genau das also, was an Schulen schon seit mindestens 20 Jahren gemacht wird.</p>
<p>Interessant war ein Vortrag zu E-Assessment und seiner Klassifikation von Anna Thillosen von <a href="http://www.e-teaching.org/">e-teaching.org</a>. Da habe ich mitgenommen, das man (a) den Aufwand scheut, (b) alle was anderes darunter verstehen und es (c) keine Synergie-Effekte gibt, schon gar nicht länderübergreifend. Das klingt jetzt vielleicht alles sehr negativ, wenn ich das so formuliere, aber ich sehe es eher als Aufgabe, daran zu arbeiten. In einzelnen Gesprächen waren anderen Teilnehmer auf jeden Fall überrascht, dass wir an der Uni Marburg einfach so E-Klausuren machen und da sollte man enger zusammenarbeiten.</p>
<p>Vielen Idee habe ich bekommen bei dem Vortrag von <a href="http://www.imb-uni-augsburg.de/nina-heinze">Nina Heinze</a> über ihre Erfahrungen mit Web 2.0 im Unterricht. Da muss ich aber erst mal meine Notizen ordnen und mir Gedanken für das nächste Semester machen. Aber da geht noch was, was die Aktivierung von Studierenden in Kursen anbelangt.</p>
<p>Alles in allem: Ich habe schon Messen erlebt, die mir gar nix gebracht haben, aber die didacta dieses Jahr gehört sicherlich nicht dazu.</p>

Überall (<a href="http://www.studiumdigitale.uni-frankfurt.de/mmw/index.html">hier</a>, <a href="http://www.macnews.de/news/49522/stanfords-medizin-studenten-lernen-mit-dem-ipad/">hier</a> und <a href="http://www.apfelnews.eu/2010/10/02/kassel-%E2%80%9Cmobile-hochschule%E2%80%9D-mit-dem-ipad/">hier</a>) werden Seminare, Workshops und Fortbildungen angeboten, wie man die Apple Geräte für das Lernen nutzt, oder es wird gleich in der Lehre eingesetzt. <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-Learning">Mobile Learning</a>, <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Learning_Environment">Personal Learning Environment</a> sind die Stichworte schlechthin. Schön und gut. Aber warum muss man immer wieder die Abhängigkeit von gewissen Geräten propagieren, wenn es ums E-Learning geht? Geräte-unabhängiges E-Learning wäre doch viel besser, oder etwa nicht?</p>

<p>Die letzte Frage ist ja wohl rhetorisch, oder? Natürlich sollte es besser sein, wenn man auf Lerninhalte von überall mit jedem Gerät zugreifen kann. Dass man dabei bestimmte Einschränkungen in Kauf nehmen muss, wenn man Lerneinheiten mit einem Smartphone mit der Displayauflösung von 320*240 Pixeln anschaut, ist schon klar. Idealerweise sollte zwar ein Stylesheet für mobile Endgeräte vorhanden sein, das die Lerninhalte für diese Geräte didaktisch sinnvoll aufbereitet. Aber ganz ehrlich: Wer bietet sowas schon an? Ein kurzer Test mit meinem Handy bei der ILIAS-Installation der Uni Marburg ergab jedenfalls gerade, dass eine Optimierung für kleine Displays nicht vorhanden ist.</p>
<p>Ist die Frage also rhetorisch? Ist es besser mit dem iPad zu lernen, als mit irgendeinem beliebigen mobilen Endgerät, von denen in der Presse sowieso nicht geredet wird? Keiner will wissen, welche tollen Geräte Toshiba, Sony, Samsung oder Lenovo herausbringt. Aber alle wollen wissen, wie Apple uns mal wieder zehn Jahre in die Zukunft katapultiert&#8230; Aha, da haben wir ja schon den ersten Grund von meiner kleinen Sammlung von Gründen, warum man das iPad zum Lernen braucht (<strong>Achtung</strong>: nicht immer ganz ernst gemeint!).</p>
<h3>Grund Nummer 1: Ein paar Krümel vom Publicity-Kuchen</h3>
<p>Wir (d.h. diejenigen, die sich in der Hochschullandschaft mit dem Thema E-Learning beschäftigen) brauchen das iPad, um unsere ohnehin unterfinanzierte Situation nicht ganz aufgeben zu müssen. Bei Politikern macht es sich immer ganz gut, wenn man beweisen kann, dass die Lehre/Forschung tatsächlich was mit dem wirklichen Leben zu tun hat. Das wirkliche Leben ist in der Politik: Publicity. Und am besten natürlich gute Publicity. Die meisten Apple-Produkte liefern genau das: gute Publicity. Apple ist ein wahres Marketingwunder und ich kann nicht aufhören, die Marketingabteilung von Apple als die beste der Welt herauszustellen. Die Message von Apple: &#8220;Unsere Produkte können zwar nicht, was du willst, aber wir machen, dass du das dann gar nicht mehr willst.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wir müssen aufpassen, dass diese Message nicht zu den Politikern durchdringt, falls das nicht schon längst der Fall ist.</p>
<h3>Grund Nummer 2: Apple möchte mit uns Geld verdienen und uns dann was abgeben – Wir können also Geld verdienen</h3>
<p>Ich weiß, ich bin ein armes Würstchen. Ich glaube noch an den Traum, dass so etwas wie Creative Commons tatsächlich funktionieren kann. Ach ja,&#8230; *SEUFZ*</p>
<p>Im Ernst, Apple verdient 30% an jeder App, die sie über ihren Store vertreiben. Um eine App im Store zu vertreiben, muss man Teil des <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Developer_Connection#iPhone_Development_Program">Developer Programms</a> sein und 99 bzw. 299 € jährlich bezahlen. Das ist übrigens beim <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Market#Zusammenarbeit_mit_den_Entwicklern">Google Android Market</a> genauso, mit dem Unterschied, dass das Registrieren einmalig 25 US-$ kostet.</p>
<p>Was ich damit sagen möchte: Apple verdient erstmal kräftig mit, ohne dass etwas über den Erfolg der App gesagt wäre. Bei der ohnehin äußerst klammen Situation an den (hessischen) Hochschulen kann sich das doch keiner ernsthaft leisten, oder? Ach so, ja, Fremdinhalte. Habe ich fast vergessen. Natürlich muss man ja nichts selbst machen, sondern kann seine Studis die Apps kaufen lassen. Falls sie ein iPhone oder iPad haben&#8230; Naja,&#8230;</p>
<h3>Grund Nummer 3: Lerninhalte sollten so leicht zugänglich sein wie möglich</h3>
<p>Aha, jetzt geht&#8217;s ans Eingemachte. Aber Moment mal, so leicht zugänglich wie möglich? Was bedeutet das eigentlich? Es bedeutet nicht unbedingt, dass sie nichts kosten dürfen. Natürlich kann man die Lerninhalte gegen Geld zur Verfügung stellen und zwar nicht nur, wenn man eine Firma ist, sondern auch, wenn man eine Universität ist. (Haha, werden einige sagen, verschwindet dieser Unterschied nicht gerade?) Wir tun das gerade mit der Einrichtung von Zertifikatskursen und einem Online MA, den man berufsbegleitend studieren soll.</p>
<p class="story-header">Leicht zugänglich bedeutet, dass man jederzeit von überall ohne technische Probleme auf die Inhalte zugreifen kann. Und dabei ist das iPad wirklich eine Good Practice Lösung. Die Bedienung des Geräts und damit der Zugang zu den Inhalten bei gut gemachten Apps ist so intuitiv wie schon lange nichts mehr war. Allerdings gibt es ja gerade eine Studie zum Thema &#8220;<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-11573666">Making things hard to read &#8216;can boost learning&#8217;</a>&#8220;. Hoffentlich gibt es nicht bald auch eine Studie zum Thema &#8220;Making thing hard to access &#8216;can boost learning&#8217;&#8221;. <img src='http://www.alexandersperl.de/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p class="story-header">Aber hier darf man einen anderen Aspekt nicht vergessen: Gibt es schon eine ILIAS-App? Nein. Eine WebCT-App? Ja, von der Iowa State University. Es gibt tatsächlich eine Blackboard App, sieht auch super aus. Allerdings hat man es mit der Tafel- und Pinnwand-Metapher ein bisschen zu arg getrieben. Das heißt, dass die Lerninhalte wohl doch nicht so einfach zugänglich sind wie zuerst gedacht. Natürlich kann man jederzeit die Inhalte mit einem Browser erreichen. Aber eine App bietet doch den Vorteil genau auf das Endgerät zugeschnitten zu sein, man muss sie nur erst einmal haben.</p>
<p class="story-header">Man darf also weiterhin gespannt sein, wohin sich der Trend entwickelt.</p>
<p class="story-header">Im Übrigen sollte man sich auch erst einmal fragen, ob denn die Basisinhalte schon an die Studierenden vermittelt worden sind, bevor man die neueste Technik auf sie loslässt. Wie sieht es denn aus mit einer Internetrecherche? Unsere Erfahrungen sind, dass die Studierenden uns seltsam anschauen, wenn man ihnen sagt, dass es auch eine zweite und manchmal dritte Ergebnisseite bei Google gibt. Bevor man sich also auf den heißen Scheiß stürzt, sollte man die Grundlagen vermittelt haben.</p>

I&#8217;m doing this for some semesters now and never had quite such an experience. I was thinking: Am I this bad a teacher to not get the stuff across (it&#8217;s not that hard, after all) or did I hint at <a href="http://www.weebly.com/">Weebly.com</a> too early and most of the classes just switched off as early as this?</p>

<li>you can concentrate on the content more</li>
<li>no need to have a deep insight into HTML and CSS (which was the killer reason for most in my courses this semester to use it)</li>
<li>no need to deal with HTML and CSS at all if you don&#8217;t want to</li>
<li>it doesn&#8217;t need to be tweaked to get a &#8216;normal&#8217; website, like you would tweak WordPress (you know, get rid of the calendar, the comments on each page and so on)</li>
<li>you have a couple of options that would require some work to include it in an HTML document of your own (Google maps, YouTube videos, etc.)</li>
<li>it&#8217;s free (and in most cases you don&#8217;t need the pro features)</li>
</ul>
<h2>What I hate about Weebly</h2>
<ul>
<li>invalid HTML (try <a title="Validate creatingwebpages.weebly.com" href="http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&amp;uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcreatingwebpages.weebly.com%2F">validating a Weebly page</a>&#8230; I mean, <code>&lt;font&gt;</code> in an XHTML 1.1 document? <code>&lt;style&gt;</code> within the <code>&lt;body&gt;</code>? Come on!)</li>
<li>invalid CSS</li>
<li>you can still do everything wrong concerning a clearly structured layout</li>
<li>no need to deal with HTML and CSS at all if you don&#8217;t want to</li>
<li>the fact that you can include so many different (multimedia) elements leads to the fact that they are often used in abundance, i.e. too often</li>
<li>using Weebly is not a guarantee to create a usable and well designed website</li>
</ul>
<p>It might seem a bit harsh to only pick up Weebly and thrash it like this, however, I will do the same with other website generators with a focus on websites and not so much on blogs or wikis (like <a title="Webs" href="http://www.webs.com/">webs.com</a>, which also has a free option, or <a title="Squarespace" href="http://www.squarespace.com/">squarespace.com</a>, which doesn&#8217;t have a free option) in some of the next courses. If you have any suggestion which generators I should have a look at, please feel free to write a comment.</p>

<p>The first one is supported by a <a href="http://alexandersperl.wordpress.com/">blog I keep especially for the course</a> and <a href="http://vzl.online.uni-marburg.de/welcome.php?page=class&amp;cid=67&amp;clid=247">an online course</a> at the VCT. The second is also a blended learning course with its <a href="http://vzl.online.uni-marburg.de/welcome.php?page=class&amp;cid=57&amp;clid=246">online component</a> at the VCT. <p>Additionally, I will be part of a group of three to teach the course &#8220;Techniques of Scientific Work&#8221;, which will be an online course with four in class session throughout the semester.</p>

<p>Nick La has gathered some very nice <a title="Single-Page Portfolio Sites" href="http://www.webdesignerwall.com/trends/single-page-portfolio-sites/">Single-Page Portfolio Sites</a> at his <a title="Web Designer Wall" href="http://www.webdesignerwall.com/">Web Designer Wall</a>. Some interesting concepts and a lot of high end use of web dev techniques. I personally love <a title="We Bleed Design" href="http://www.webleeddesign.com/">We Bleed Design</a> for its fancy PNG effects and <a title="Fröjd" href="http://www.frojd.se/">Fröjd</a> for its simplicity.</p>
<p>Then, there is the <a title="Reverse Graffiti Project" href="http://reversegraffitiproject.com/">Reverse Graffiti Project</a>. If you don&#8217;t know what reverse graffiti is, go and have a look at the video. Incredible!</p>
<p>For those of you who haven&#8217;t heard this already: NASA has their photos online on a new website called <a title="NASA Images" href="http://www.nasaimages.org/">NASA Images</a> (you would have guessed) powered by Internet Archive. If you&#8217;re not into astronomy, you will still like the trippy images anyway&#8230;</p>
<p>And finally, especially for my students, there&#8217;s the <a title="Opera Web Standards Curriculum" href="http://www.opera.com/wsc/">Opera Web Standards Curriculum</a>, &#8220;a complete course to teach you standards-based web development, including HTML, CSS, design principles and background theory, and JavaScript basics.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As a designer working in an academic environment you are used to sit in presentations and get a badly designed PowerPoint presentation which at best distracts from the speech someone is giving. I know this is happening all the time and why bother? Well, I can tell you why.</p>

<p>There has been a lot of PowerPoint bashing everywhere, simply because you sit in presentations and people tend to make the same mistakes all over again. But what I experienced yesterday really took the biscuit. I was at some sort ceremonial act for a new center for didactics in higher education at the university and four keynote speakers were supposed to give presentations on various topics.</p>
<p>Ok, step back and think about the following words: keynote speakers, didactics, higher education, ceremonial act. Did you let them sink in? Keep them in mind for later, let&#8217;s move on.</p>
<p>They did just about everything wrong that you always try to get across to students who take your courses in which you try to tell them how to hold a good presentation. How it should be well structured and how you should only use PowerPoint if it really illustrates what you have to say and if it does not distract from what you are saying, among several other things. Now, here is what they did.</p>
<p>The first one had created a PP presentation which was so full of typographical and design related errors that I can&#8217;t even begin to list them all. Think about indents, think about lists, think about picture quality, think about certain colors (red) on certain colors (green), and a lot more. Every slide was a different kind of mess. It either had been created in ten minutes or without any care.</p>
<p>The second speaker is out because he didn&#8217;t use PP. (It was actually the most pleasant speech I heard this day. Not least because he didn&#8217;t use PP.)</p>
<p>The third one had a quite pleasant selection of colors which mainly consisted of shades of gray. The slides were so crammed with diagrams, tables, lists, more diagrams and so on, that it was hard to follow the presentation because it took so much time to read the stuff. At least on the first two slides, because after that I gave up reading and listening. Additionally, the speaker sped up the presentation a bit to catch up some time the speaker before her had overrun. So she flipped through the slides leaving a trace of letters in everybody&#8217;s eyes.</p>
<p>The third speaker used Comic Sans throughout the presentation. Need I say more? I will, just in case someone will say, why is that so grave an issue. Using Comic Sans is a problem when you hold a presentation in front of two hundred people from the university who are either from the highest ranks in administration, or are professors, or are member of teaching staff anyway. Plus, your presentation is about a highly sophisticated piece of research, even if it&#8217;s got to do something with learning. It is not a problem, if hold your presentation in front of two hundred ten-year-olds.</p>
<p>Ok, now can you remember the words I pointed out before? What does this tell us? All of these speakers have gone through the whole of an academic career, all of them were professors, and none of them cared to use PowerPoint the way it&#8217;s supposed to be used? Or let&#8217;s be less intentionally: they didn&#8217;t know how to.</p>
<p>Am I being unfair? Am I too picky when it comes to these things? I think not. Years after years we tried to teach our students how to do all these things right and now we are being confronted with staff that tries to teach staff how to do these things right and they fail to follow the simplest rules you need to know when using PP. This cannot be. Just take a little more time to follow rules or have someone else do it for you. Don&#8217;t be ashamed to ask someone.</p>
